Cricket - shots taken at Garran Oval, the field was lit by strong sunshine, with rapidly closing dark clouds about to halt play.

Here are a few shots taken at Lake Burley Griffin. I used a polarising filter to reduce light reflection from the water surface and increase sky colour saturation.

VRC Derby Day

Light/cloud similar to Derby Day last year. I wanted to better this shot - this time shooting in RAW format.

Location: McCarthey Road, which comes off Wallaroo Road. The three horses at the gate and I listened to the Derby, before I issued orders for them to wander upfield for the wide-open shot. As you can see from the gate shot, ears pricked, these amigos weren't impressed with the odds-on Derby favourite losing to a 100/1 outsider and breaking 15 years of precedence.

[
Okay, I'll explain a little VRC Derby precedence. This is a time honoured horse race, staged at the beginning of the Flemington Spring Carnival in early November; Group I level for three year olds, run at the Set Weights scale over 2500 metres. A stout staying pedigree is essential. In recent times, every winner of the Derby has come through leadup events that are the equivalent of the Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield or the AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley. More specifically the first three placegetters in each race has supplied the past 15 winners, dating back to 1992, when Redding came off a super unlucky fourth in the AAMI Vase to win the Derby. In other words, the Norman Robinson Stakes and the Vase placegetters generally provide you the Derby winner.]
